I have planned an exciting year with many activities! This guide has been written to inform you of the events in which music students will be involved, as well as policies and procedures for members. Also, please watch for additional letters during the year for information regarding added activities or changes in the schedule. I feel that parent / student / teacher communication is a must in keeping our music program and your child on track. It is very important that you read this guide and return the Signature Form and Emergency Form to me by Friday, August 31st, as an indication that you and your child have: 1. Read and discussed this information together. 2. Thoroughly examined and notated the calendar section. 3. Completed the Signature Form and Emergency Form. *NOTE: These forms are for your child s protection and safety. No student will be permitted to go on any Band field trips unless these forms are completed and turned in. Students will not need to turn in additional field trip permission slips during the year, however parents will be notified in advance as field trips are scheduled. If there is ever a problem concerning your child and our music program, please feel free to call or send me an e-mail. Parents can expect a response within 24 hours. If you wish to see me any time during the school year, please call and make an appointment so that I may give you my full attention. Due to the amount of preparation just prior to concerts or MPA Assessment, I will be unable to schedule conferences during those specific weeks, but feel free to schedule an appointment at all other times. Band is a year long course. In order to have successful band we need everyone committed play their part. Schedule changes completed after the first two weeks are done only for special situations approved by the Director. Finally, lets remember that every student is key to the success of the band and a performing organization is only as good as the level of effort given by its individual members. I am looking forward to working with you in creating and cultivating a positive musical experience! Musically, Christopher L. This will also reduce the need for excessive fundraising. 6th Graders: Students should wear dark slacks, dark floor length dresses or dark floor length skirts, and light colored button down shirts or blouses. Ties are nice, but optional. Students should not come in jeans, T-shirts, tennis shoes or shorts! 7th & 8th Graders: The Advanced & Intermediate Bands will need to obtain a Tux shirt. The Tux Shirt is available through Chain of Lakes for $23. This is a tentative price since I have not heard back from AfterHours at this time. This is a special Tux shirt with the Chain of Lakes Logo embroidered onto it. Students will also need Black Pants or Floor Length Skirt, Black Socks and Black Dress Shoes. Please provide these on your own. The following is a summary of your Band Fee and Uniform Fee Total: 6th Graders: $20 7th Graders & 8th Graders who need a new shirt: $43 (Tentative Price for shirt) 8th Graders who do not need a new shirt: $20 Button covers that are misplaced must be replaced for $2. As always, please make checks payable to Chain of Lakes Middle School. Students will be sized August 28th and uniform money is due Friday, September 7th. Note: If the cost of purchasing the uniform is a financial burden please let Mr. Sego know. We have several donated tux shirts from previous students. Anyone who would like to help with the cost of a uniform for someone less fortunate will be greatly appreciated. School Owned Instruments A limited number of school-owned instruments are available for students use. School Instruments are issued to students who would like to play Tuba, French Horn, Euphonium, Bassoon, Oboe or Percussion. School Instruments are provided because these particular Instruments cost an inordinate amount of money. Students issued school owned instruments are asked to pay $50.00 to Chain of Lakes Middle School by September 14th. This is a once a year fee and will cover the cost of normal wear and tear such as refinishing or replacing worn out springs. Repairs such as dents, broken keys or stuck slides are the student s and parent s responsibility. Instruments should be in the same playing condition at the end of the school year as when they are assigned to the student at the beginning of the school year. If an instrument is stolen or destroyed, the instrument (or any part thereof) will be replaced by the student or parents. Most home owner s and renter s insurance policies will cover the cost of instruments stolen or destroyed. Please review your policy. Students may be issued instruments before September 14th, however they are asked to pay the $50 fee before taking the instrument home. Grading Policy Students will be graded on the following: Pass offs - 60% Participation - 40% Pass off Grade The Rank system is a list of 72 requirements divided into 12 ranks with 6 requirements per rank and labeled as military ranks. The Rank system is designed around the Orange County Student Performance Standards for Middle School Instrumental Music Programs. The playing exercises are taken from the Standard of Excellence method books and are to be played off for the director with absolutely no mistakes. The student should keep track of his or her own individual progress and may not move on to a new rank until completing the current rank. However, individual requirements within a rank may be passed off in any order. The director will keep track of each student s progress and post updates every two weeks. Should a discrepancy arise, the student should notify the director immediately. Do not wait until you receive your grade to bring up discrepancies. For a complete listing of all requirements please refer to the entire Pass off list which has been included with this handbook starting with page 11. You are responsible for saving this handbook and Passoff list to keep track of the requirements for the rank on which you are currently working. If you should lose this handbook or Passoff list, there will be a fee of $1.00 to purchase a replacement. Each rank requirement is to be played individually by the student for the director with absolutely no mistakes. You will receive one try. If a mistake is made the requirement must be replayed (with no mistakes) at a later time. Mistakes include: poor tone quality, wrong notes, wrong rhythms, key signature mistakes, cracked notes (poor start to a note), unsteady tempos, missed dynamic marking (too loud or soft), incorrect phrasing (breathing in the wrong place), hesitations, stopping, incorrect articulation (tonguing), poor posture, incorrect horn carriage and possibly others. The student may attempt as many requirements as possible until a mistake occurs. At this point the student s turn ends. Students may also perform Pass offs two times a week before or after school. This means that each student may receive a total of three chances a week. Before and After School sign-up times will be posted Monday mornings. When a requirement is successfully played, it is counted towards that student s Nine Weeks Grade. Each requirement is worth 10% of the student s grade. If a student passes off all six requirements he or she will totally satisfy the pass off portion of his or her grade. (60%) Carry-Over Students who passed off more than six requirements during a nine week grading period may count all additional requirements towards the next Nine Weeks grade. Chair placement Student seating or chair placement, will be determined by the number of requirements that have been passed off successfully. In the case of ties, chair placement will be awarded to the student who occupied the chair previously. Participation Grade The Participation grade will make up 40% of the total grade. All students will start with a perfect 40% at the beginning of each nine-week period. Positive points will be given as follows: +4 Points Band paperwork turned in early. (-1 Point for each day late) +4 Points Attendance to outside concerts (documented with a program or ticket). +20 Points All-State or All-County Audition. (Student may sign off on two Passoffs) +20 Points Solo & Ensemble Participation. (Student may sign off on two Passoffs) +?? Points Participation and preparation for Music Performance Assessment.
